A new report helps cities to streamline complex processes and empower new businesses to open faster. 

According to Forbes, the economy is bouncing back, and as the pandemic related hurdles fall away for restaurants and small business there are still quite a few obstacles to keep the process difficult.  This new report from Institute of Justice (IJ) is hoping to help.

The IJ report offers a roadmap for cities to remove the barriers to business and said, “Local officials must make it cheaper, faster, and simpler for entrepreneurs to start a business—and this report presents specific recommendations to make those needed changes.”

Russo Modular partners with a diverse group of commercial developers,  franchisees, and entrepreneurs in many different cities and states.   From local drive-thru coffee shops to fast food restaurants, each business has a unique set of hurdles to overcome.  Navigating unnecessarily complex bureaucratic processes should not be one of them.

Federal regulation usually gets the most attention.  The reality is local regulations are most often the first barriers small businesses encounter.  Typically local governments will spend money on creating regulatory workarounds, however IJ suggests cities invest in removing barriers that are already on the books. 

For example, opening a restaurant in Phoenix has a staggering 58 steps right now.

The report also contains best practices for city officials to streamline this process.  Adopting more flexible fees, creating a real one-stop-shop for permits, and improving zoning and business licensing requirements are a few.
